OCTOBER 2008

Just finished a vocal session with the fabulous Brooks sisters.  You may remember them as the dynamic duo that saved my last album.. Well they did it again. Sweet backup vox for my new record.  The wheels are officially back on the cart!

Recording was interrupted in July by my summer in the backwoods of Ontario.  Playing keys and guitar and something that sounded like horns.  The show that was called LEGENDS but was not a "Legends" show.  Yes.. my friends have been very confused.  Ahhhh but I have new friends..!  The brilliant Tory Doctor, who kept me sane and awake... and of course my car pool friends Christine and Julia.  Hmmmm...  you know Julia is the third person I know who's been in a movie with John Travolta.  (...props, rich girl!)

My boss Mike Lerner challenged us to write 20 songs in 12 hours.  Well, what seemed like a crazy notion turned into 13 songs.  I won't brag but I was the only one to come through..!  Ben and Mike came up with a few but only I was desperate enough to put in the full 12 hours.  Felt good, not having written since I started this record.  Well, actually it felt like Hell, but you know what I mean.

The offbeat hightlight of September was the Jacknife Express party in Kitchener.  Not only did James McAuliffe choose the lyrics to my song "The Notebook" for this release, but he asked me to play too!

I must admit it wasn't like any poetry event I ever saw.  We go to the Circus Room early and the tunes were cranked.  Before long the 'band' kicked in and tore it up.  It never occured to me to take earplugs to a poetry reading..!  I forget the band name... hmmm... but actually, once the poets took the stage they totally chilled into some cool improvs behind the words.

The highlight was easily Amber Long.  Her rhymes were totally synced to her trusty iPod which cranked out cool techno grooves.  Presumably she took the time to imagine what Minnie Mouse would look like if she joined the GO-GOs and carefully planned her wardrobe..  In short, Amber raised the bar...!

Tomorrow I must summon up the spirit of Buddy Holly... for probably the last time this year...
